ELECTRICITY – Rotating power outages in the RIA due to a technical issue with the first combustion turbine in Ambohimanambola

This Friday afternoon, many neighborhoods in Antananarivo and its surrounding areas experienced two-hour power outages. According to Jirama, this is a rotating load shedding caused by a production deficit estimated at 20MW on the Antananarivo Interconnected Network (RIA). This deficit is attributed to a technical problem affecting a production machine at the Combustion Turbine (TAC 1) plant in Ambohimanambola, as well as insufficient output from solar installations due to cloudy weather.

The power cuts began at 3:00 PM and were scheduled to last until 9:00 PM this Friday, with each affected locality experiencing a two-hour interruption. However, these outages are expected to be limited to this Friday only, as Jirama has mobilized its technical teams to restore the turbine’s operation and gradually return electricity production and distribution in the capital and its surroundings to normal.
