Products from local sectors are gradually finding their place on European shelves and commercial circuits. This initiative has been supported by Germany since 2023.
For Oliver Knoerich, the German Ambassador to Antananarivo, the challenge goes beyond simply finding buyers. It is primarily about preparing companies to meet the requirements of the European market. The initiative identifies local exporters and supports them on critical issues such as quality, standards, and market access conditions. This approach allows companies to better position themselves and build long-term commercial relationships. In three years, the program has helped generate 22.6 million euros in exports, equivalent to over 112 billion ariary, giving a new dimension to trade.
This market opening covers several products that are already part of the export potential. Essential oils, vanilla, aromatic plants, spices, cocoa, and derivative products are among the goods involved. Additionally, there are dried fruits, gluten-free flour alternatives, and moringa. Behind this diversity are producers and companies seeking to add more value to their activities.
The figures reflect this progress. Sixty-nine contracts have been concluded for eight companies under the program. Nine partner companies contributed to the 22.6 million euro export volume to Europe. Meanwhile, the eight participating companies generated 2.9 million euros in turnover through new commercial partners.
The Netherlands is the main destination, with over one million euros in trade. France follows with over 500,000 euros, ahead of Switzerland with over 400,000 euros. Germany accounts for over 300,000 euros, while Italy exceeds 200,000 euros.
Beyond the figures, this dynamic can have effects on the entire production chain. Access to new clients pushes companies to improve their products, practices, and ability to meet international standards. For 2026-2027, the support is expected to expand further into cosmetics, with the planned arrival of three to five new companies. This prospect could further broaden market opportunities and strengthen activities around local sectors.
