An attack attributed to the jihadist group Boko Haram against a military position near N’Guigmi, in southeastern Niger, left about ten Nigerien soldiers dead on Friday, according to local sources cited by AFP and the Nigerien Press Agency (ANP).
According to a resident of N’Guigmi who requested anonymity for security reasons, the attack occurred on Friday morning in the vicinity of this town in the Diffa region, located on the shores of Lake Chad. He also indicated that some assailants were killed and that the army was conducting sweeping operations following the attack.
On social media, N’Guigmi residents reported a toll of ten soldiers and four members of the national guard killed. The ANP confirmed the attack and the death of members of the Defense and Security Forces, without specifying the number of victims.
According to the state media, the governor of the Diffa region, General Mahamadou Ibrahim Bagadoma, attended the burial of the members of the Defense and Security Forces who died during the attack a few hours after the incident.
The town of N’Guigmi is located in a border area of Lake Chad, where Boko Haram and its dissident branch, the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), have been operating for several years. The Diffa region has been facing a jihadist insurgency since 2009.
This insurgency has caused thousands of deaths and displaced millions of people, mainly in northeastern Nigeria, before spreading to Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. Facing this threat, these countries have reactivated the Multinational Joint Task Force responsible for fighting armed groups in the Lake Chad basin.
In mid-May, Chad conducted airstrikes and ground operations against Boko Haram positions on islands in Lake Chad, with the support of Nigeria and Niger, in response to deadly attacks against its army.
In addition to the violence in its eastern region, Niger is also facing attacks in the west of the country from jihadist groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State organization. The country has been led by a military regime since the July 2023 coup, in a context marked by persistent insecurity.
