AMBOHIMIANDRA – A water leak reappears

A new water leak is worrying the residents of Ambohimiandra, who fear further deterioration of the road. Three months after the water pipes were replaced in the area, a new leak has surfaced on the pavement.

“We noticed this leak a few days ago. It is abnormal because no water should be coming out of this road. It was dry until recently,” said Fameno Rabearivony, a local resident. The water is flowing from a manhole cover, causing the surrounding asphalt to degrade. Users warn that if no immediate action is taken, the road will deteriorate again, just as it did during previous incidents.

Jirama, the national water and electricity utility, confirmed it is aware of the leak but has not yet identified the source. “The problem likely does not stem from the pipes that were recently replaced,” the company explained, noting that it is still investigating whether the leak originates from its own pipes or from wastewater.

Jirama has requested permission from the Urban Commune of Antananarivo to excavate the road to identify and repair the damage, though the municipality claims it has not yet received the request. This section of the road has been repeatedly damaged in recent years due to recurring leaks. In June, Jirama replaced two major pipes, including a DN 500 main line, to resolve the issue, but the problem persists as the aging network struggles to handle increased water production from the Mandroseza plant.
