ENERGY – The RIA requires 270 MW during peak hours

Jirama highlights a clear improvement in its production compared to 2025. However, the drop in water levels at Andekaleka and the breakdown of a combustion turbine continue to weigh on the supply.

The Antananarivo Interconnected Network (RIA) requires a power capacity of 225 MW in the morning and 270 MW in the evening, according to Jirama. Several production sources cover this demand, including the Andekaleka dam (116 MW), the AKSA thermal power plant (60 MW), combustion turbines (TAC) 1 and 2 (30 MW), and the Farahantsana hydroelectric plant (28 MW), supplemented by solar farms totaling 52 MW.

Currently, part of this capacity is unavailable. Jirama reported an 18 MW deficit yesterday morning. One combustion turbine is out of service, and Andekaleka is producing only 97 MW during peak hours and 45 MW during the day. Hydroelectric production is also declining due to water scarcity, and solar output drops during cloudy weather.

As a result, power cuts have returned to a daily occurrence since Wednesday, lasting 2 to 3 hours. Despite this, Jirama emphasizes that production has significantly improved compared to last year, thanks to state-level decisions, including the purchase of 116 generator sets and the expansion of the solar park (Ambatolampy, Mangatany, Ampangabe, etc.). Artificial rain operations are also being conducted at Andekaleka and Mandraka to boost water levels.

Statistics show a clear improvement: the estimated production deficit for September 2026 is 23.5 MW, compared to 44.9 MW a year earlier. While users like local artisans and shopkeepers still face disruptions, they acknowledge that the situation is much better than the severe outages experienced in 2025.
