WATER SPORTS – Traditional sailing in the spotlight in the North with the Sookany Trophy

The nautical and cultural sector of northern Madagascar is preparing to host a new competition dedicated to maritime traditions. Succeeding the “Milay Contest,” the “Sookany Trophy” will make its official debut from July 17 to July 19, 2026, in Ramena, Antsiranana.

Organized by Koezy Company, the event takes its name from the Malagasy term “Sokany,” which refers to the rudder of a dhow. This semantic choice highlights the organizers’ desire to showcase the mastery, vision, and technical heritage associated with the use of the dhow, a vessel iconic to navigation in the north of the island for its robustness and maneuverability.

Over three days, the competition will mobilize 38 crews, totaling 152 sailors, who will compete within the bay of Antsiranana. Beyond the sporting aspect, the event incorporates a cultural dimension with entertainment and social activities aimed at promoting local maritime heritage. A prize of 10 million ariary is planned for the winning crew.

This event is part of a tourism promotion initiative for northern Madagascar. Supported by a group of institutional and private partners, the Sookany Trophy aims to establish itself as a lasting regional reference in the field of traditional sailing. In parallel, the organizers encourage companies wishing to associate with the event to join the current partners, while inviting the public to prepare their stay via dedicated travel platforms, including Sugarloaf Travel.
