The Confederation of African Football (CAF) remains silent as the standoff between UEFA and the FIFA boss intensifies following the abandonment of the World Cup privatization project.
Confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino has been shaken following the withdrawal of his controversial plan to sell shares of the global governing body’s competitions to private investors. The Italian-Swiss official is facing an unprecedented revolt and is reportedly on the verge of being ousted, according to several European media outlets. Europe 1 questioned: “Could the FIFA president be forced to leave his post? Gianni Infantino is going through the most serious crisis of his presidency.” Two weeks ago, he was at the pinnacle following the global success of the World Cup, the most profitable in history with nearly 15 billion in revenue generated. However, since Sunday, he has been more vulnerable than ever.
For its part, the CAF remains silent and has not yet expressed its position, while the European press is widely reporting on the latest developments concerning the future of the head of the international football governing body.
The president of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, had planned a meeting this week regarding the reform project announced by Gianni Infantino on Tuesday, July 28, before it was rejected on Saturday. The CAF had previously stated it was “listening to the privatization project and not closing the door on it.”
UEFA and Concacaf reacted as early as Thursday, two days later, and did not hide their firm opposition to the project. According to L’Équipe, “UEFA is threatening Gianni Infantino with legal action… It reportedly sent a formal notice to the FIFA boss and several actors linked to the abandoned project…”
This offensive comes the day after the project was abandoned on Saturday. The removal of Gianni Infantino, abandoned by his European supporters, is legally possible. One-fifth of the 211 members, or 43, is enough to trigger the procedure and request the convocation of an extraordinary congress. FIFA then has a maximum period of three months to organize this congress for a vote on whether or not to keep the world football leader. A simple majority would decide the president’s fate, while the next election is scheduled for March 2027.
