Heavy rains that began on Friday in Ambovombe have left many in distress. 43 households in Mangarivotra had to be evacuated following the subsequent rise in water levels. Four classrooms at the reference center of the Regional Directorate of National Education in Ambovombe have been mobilized to temporarily house the affected families.
Regional authorities and the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC) visited the site on Saturday to provide initial assistance to the evacuees. The support includes accommodation, food, drinking water, and sanitary needs.
Several neighborhoods in Ambovombe, notably Mangarivotra, Berary Stationnement, and Andaboly, have been affected by flooding. The intensification of rainfall, accompanied by gusts of wind, has caused damage and disrupted the daily lives of residents.
Authorities are calling on residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions. Affected individuals without shelter are advised to approach nearby public schools or public infrastructure.
According to meteorological service forecasts, rains are expected to continue until next Tuesday in several regions of Madagascar. The persistent presence of clouds in the south of the Great Island is contributing to the continued precipitation.
