The increase of the Central Bank of Madagascar’s (BFM) key interest rate to 12.5% continues to spark debate. For economist and stock market analyst Zo Andriatsitohaina, this decision comes at an inopportune time, as the government is simultaneously seeking to stimulate investment and economic recovery.
These two orientations are difficult to reconcile. On one hand, the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) is pushing for growth, while the central bank’s restrictive monetary policy aims to curb inflation, creating a significant policy gap.
