Uber is ending its operations in Nigeria and Uganda effective Wednesday, September 2, 2026. This decision comes as the American ride-hailing company simultaneously announces the elimination of 3,300 jobs worldwide, representing approximately 10% of its workforce.
“After a thorough review of our business, we have made the difficult decision to end our operations in Nigeria, effective September 2, 2026,” Uber stated in a press release, without specifying the reasons for its withdrawal.
Founded in 2009, the company entered Nigeria in 2014, starting in Lagos, before gradually expanding its activities to other regions of the country. In 2016, Uber launched its operations in Uganda.
In Nigeria, the withdrawal occurs against an economic backdrop marked by a sharp rise in the cost of living. The country is facing the effects of economic reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu, notably the removal of fuel subsidies, which has led to a significant increase in pump prices.
On Wednesday afternoon, users were still able to book rides via the Uber app in Nigeria. The company specified that its support service would remain available until September 23 to handle ongoing disputes.
The departure from Nigeria and Uganda comes a few months after Uber’s withdrawal from Tanzania. The company had announced in January 2026 the end of its activities in that country after ten years of presence.
In 2023, Uber’s Country Manager for Nigeria, Tope Akinwumi, estimated that the company had contributed approximately 34 billion naira—about 53.6 million dollars at the time—to the Nigerian economy since its establishment in the country.
