Electrical infrastructure in the Itasy region has once again been targeted by thieves. The latest incident occurred last Wednesday night in Antapibehivavy, located in the commune of Ambohimitarona, Miarinarivo district. Criminals cut and stole high-voltage electrical cables corresponding to one of the three phases. According to information provided by Jirama, this theft caused a voltage drop and power outages throughout the region.
According to reports, the tampering by the thieves caused sparks, which ignited a bush fire at the scene. Part of the cables was consumed by the flames. For safety reasons, technicians had to cut off power to the entire network. Ten communes are directly affected by this situation: Antaboaka, Soamahamanina, Mandiavato, Miarinarivo, Ambatomanjaka, Manazary, Analavory, Ampefy, Soavinandriana, and Mananasy.
Jirama’s technical teams are already mobilized on the ground to replace the stolen and damaged cables. Power supply is expected to return to normal once the repairs are completed. Cable thefts are on the rise in Itasy. Among the most recent incidents is the one that occurred on October 16 in Sapin Be, Ambatofotsy, where 400 meters of cables were stolen. Faced with the repetition of these acts, Jirama calls on the population to protect public property and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
