The name of the future United States Ambassador to Madagascar has been revealed. President Donald Trump has selected career diplomat Marc Dillard for the position. However, his nomination and subsequent arrival on the Great Island remain subject to confirmation by the Senate.
A member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor, Marc Dillard brings nearly three decades of experience at the U.S. Department of State. Notably, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission and later as Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, from 2022 to July 2025.
His career also includes postings in Budapest, Hungary; Kinshasa, DRC; Lilongwe, Malawi; Tokyo, Japan; Seoul, South Korea; and Sofia, Bulgaria. In Washington, he also led an office responsible for economic policy and public diplomacy within the Department of State.
His nomination was submitted last Friday alongside a long list of ambassadorial proposals for other countries worldwide. In the United States, ambassadors are appointed by the President but must obtain the consent of the Senate. The candidate is first reviewed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which may hold a public hearing. If the committee approves the nomination, it is then submitted to the full Senate for a vote.
