With less than three weeks to go before the Davis Cup, scheduled from July 22 to 25 in Gaborone, Botswana, the Malagasy men’s team selection remains unofficial. Amidst administrative constraints, injuries, and internal tensions, the Akomba’s preparation is proving delicate.
The countdown to the Davis Cup has begun, but Madagascar is still waiting to find out which players will defend its colors. The Malagasy Tennis Federation (FMT) has not yet unveiled the final list, despite the selection tournament held from June 15 to 19 at the ACSA.
Five players had been summoned: Nicolas Raharivony, Iandry Nantenaina Iarivomanana, Hasina Mbolanirina, Fanantenantsoa Radonirina, and Tovonirina Ratovonirina. The final ranking was to be determined based on the number of wins, head-to-head records, and, if necessary, the percentage of sets and games won.
On the court, Tovonirina Ratovonirina secured his ticket to the competition. Conversely, the Madagascar champion, Nicolas Raharivony, convinced he should have qualified automatically, refused to play the four selection matches following a regulation change he believes was instituted against him.
The National Technical Director (DTN), Dally Randriantefy, explains that the list is delayed due to several uncertainties. “Some players are blocked by their single-entry American visas, while others are injured or unable to leave their work,” she specified.
Regarding Nicolas Raharivony, the DTN is firm: “He did not show up for any of his four matches, without notifying the referee, the captain, or the DTN. We will listen to him, but Tovonirina won the selections and Nicolas will not play in the Davis Cup.” When contacted, Nicolas Raharivony declined to comment.
As the Gaborone deadline approaches, this delay in designating the team reduces the collective preparation time—a situation far from ideal for a Malagasy team that aspires to perform well on the African stage.
