TAXI-BROUSSE – High season fare adjusted to 70,000 Ariary

The first wave of vacationers and tourists has already arrived in Mahajanga following the release of the CEPE exam results. As a preferred tourist destination for Malagasy people, the ‘City of Flowers’ welcomes many visitors each year coming to enjoy the long vacation, even before the National Day festivities begin.

As stipulated by the agreement between transport cooperative officials, the travel ticket price has been adjusted to 70,000 Ariary for all national cooperatives connecting Antananarivo to Mahajanga, effective for over a week. Since last year, however, some national cooperatives had already set their rate at 70,000 Ariary due to road conditions, rising spare parts costs, and vehicle wear and tear.

“The old seasonal rates, applied particularly during Easter, Christmas, or high season, are no longer in effect. Since last year, cooperatives have set the maximum ticket price at 70,000 Ariary and the minimum at 60,000 Ariary for the high season. Our mission is to monitor the application of this tariff. It must not exceed the maximum price of 70,000 Ariary,” explained Zézé Michèle Genatrita Razafinandrasana, Director of the Land Transport Agency (ATT) in Mahajanga, yesterday.

Some private companies, such as Cotisse, apply their own pricing grid. Since December 2025, the Lite or economy class ticket has been set at 65,000 Ariary for the Mahajanga-Antananarivo route. The Premium service is offered at 90,000 Ariary, while the VIP seat costs 125,000 Ariary. Meanwhile, the first-class category of Malagasy Transport Première Classe (TPC) has maintained its ticket price at 117,000 Ariary for the Mahajanga-Tana journey, including breakfast.

In total, thirty-three vehicles carrying 561 passengers arrived in Aranta last Sunday. On average, about twenty taxi-brousse are recorded arriving each day. The majority of tourists come from the capital and other regions by taxi-brousse or rental cars, such as Sprinter-brand buses, or by plane for those arriving from Mayotte or the Comoros.

“We opted to travel by rental bus from Tana. Getting to Amborovy beach is very difficult without a vehicle. There are many of us, including dozens of grandchildren and young people, which makes it cost-effective for our group. Outings and swimming at the beach are very important. The warm climate of Mahajanga is a real attraction compared to the winter temperatures in the capital,” a father said.
