BETSIBOKA – Gold mining operations brought under control

The Ministry of Mines and Strategic Resources held a press conference yesterday to present the results and objectives of recent inspections in the Betsiboka region, aimed at monitoring mining activities and enforcing compliance, particularly in gold mining.

This second operation, part of a sector reorganization launched in May 2026, seeks to identify unauthorized activities, monitor equipment usage, and encourage operators to work within the legal framework, ensuring that gold mining benefits local communities and populations.

The inspections involve various stakeholders in the gold sector, including gold collectors, permit holders, small and large-scale operators, purchasing counters, and the Madagascar Gold Center (Centrale de l’or de Madagascar).

Mihary Ratsimbazafy, Director General of the Madagascar Gold Center, stated that field presence allows authorities to verify operational conditions and better understand the challenges faced by miners and local residents.

The control focuses on unauthorized operations and the use of heavy machinery. For instance, bucket dredges require specific permits. While some mechanical equipment is allowed for artisanal miners, it is subject to power restrictions. Operators are encouraged to check official online resources for compliance guidelines.

Unauthorized use of heavy equipment may lead to seizure until the situation is regularized. Recent investigations by the Mining Police, such as the case in Beanana, Maevatanana district, demonstrate the authorities’ commitment to curbing illegal activities and improving the tracking of gold extraction and trade.

The government aims to ensure that gold mining contributes to municipal revenues and supports local livelihoods through legal extraction, processing, and trade. Authorities are also working to streamline the permit application process to encourage formalization.
