The international symposium themed “Climate, Natural Resources, and Society: Challenges and Solutions for a Sustainable Future” commenced yesterday at the University of Toliara. Malagasy and international researchers, educators, development stakeholders, and students have gathered to produce tangible and practical resolutions for the country. The impacts of climate change on society and natural resources—most notably water scarcity, drought, and the depletion of marine resources—were highlighted, with a strong emphasis on the urgent need for solutions.
“The symposium aims to provide scientific knowledge, but above all, practical approaches by incorporating the utilization of traditional wisdom. We eagerly await the adaptation strategy regarding climate challenges that will emerge from this exchange,” stated Francis Veriza, President of the University of Toliara. The event continues today with scientific presentations, research poster exhibits, and project showcases.
The President of the University of Toliara underscored the urgency of providing solutions to the highest levels of the State. “It is time to offer solutions. It is time to demonstrate that we are researchers as well as educators,” he declared in his opening address. “We are currently training graduates who face unemployment. We must guide them. Beyond sharing scientific knowledge, we have a duty to support them so they can practically face life after their five years at university,” he added.
It was further noted that, moving forward, the top student in each field of study will be rewarded. Discussions today will focus on themes regarding traditional knowledge, sustainable management, and strategies for adapting to climate challenges.
