SUSPICION OF DESTABILIZATION – Prime Minister declares war on anti-refoundation forces

Following the stance of the Head of State, the Prime Minister has linked the recent wave of kidnappings and suspected murders to an attempt at political destabilization. In a statement yesterday, he issued an ultimatum against those who, according to him, are trying to block the national refoundation process.

It is a war. These were the words of Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison, speaking yesterday about the current security situation. With a martial tone and a grave expression, the former senior officer of the National Gendarmerie made the declaration at the Mahazoarivo State Palace.

“It breaks my heart to see our children killed in this way. As Prime Minister, I cannot tolerate harm to the lives of Malagasy people, because I am Malagasy,” he stated. However, beyond the emotion, the response to the current situation is clearly political. The head of government directly links the wave of disappearances and the discovery of lifeless bodies in recent days to a desire to destabilize the government and slow down the refoundation process.

Faced with the situation, the former military man has chosen to step into the role of a wartime leader, issuing an ultimatum to those he claims want to block the refoundation. “Measures are already in place. However, this is a war. Thus, whoever is hiding behind these murders to destabilize this ongoing refoundation, I will show zero tolerance and I am ready to lead the battle,” he declared.

In recent days, reports of missing persons, including teenagers, have surged. Yesterday alone, thirteen reports of disappearances were filed in Antananarivo. Some individuals were found dead and mutilated.

“To my knowledge, there has never been anything like this in Madagascar,” affirmed the leader at Mahazoarivo, adding: “We cannot tolerate this.” By elevating the current security situation to the level of a political conspiracy, the Prime Minister is aligning with the position taken by Head of State Colonel Michaël Randrianirina.

In a speech delivered at the Capsat camp in Soanierana on Saturday, the leader at Iavoloha argued that this is a maneuver to “instill psychosis in Madagascar to claim internationally that the country is in flames.” He added that “all this is part of their strategy to destabilize this country which is nevertheless in the process of recovering.”

With his statement yesterday, Mamitiana Rajaonarison has drawn a frontline. The government is at war against those it claims are trying to obstruct the refoundation. “This refoundation must succeed at all costs, because those who obstruct it are rejoicing in the misfortune of the Malagasy people,” the former Gendarmerie officer asserted, adding: “No one will obstruct this refoundation without suffering the consequences.”

This political rhetoric was mirrored in the statements of members of the National Joint Planning Body (OMC-NAT) during their press conference on Sunday at the Ministry of Interior and Decentralization in Anosy. The OMC-NAT is the entity responsible for political and strategic decisions regarding security and public order.

Based on the statements of political decision-makers, the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) will now treat the current events not as mere criminal incidents, but as an offensive against the stability of the State. Following the Prime Minister’s media address, the National Joint Operational Staff (Emmo-nat) also made a statement last night.

Speaking on behalf of Emmo-nat, Police Controller General Jean Victor Tsaramonina, Director General of the National Police, spoke of zero tolerance. He also announced a massive deployment of FDS elements starting yesterday. Systematic searches will be implemented for vehicles with tinted windows, he said. He further warned that searches will be conducted in neighborhoods and even private homes “based on intelligence.” A tightening of penal policy has been announced.

The Director General of Police echoed the political rhetoric, referring to a “destabilization strategy” behind the current events. Citizen contribution to identify the suspected perpetrators of these crimes is being sought. The reactivation of citizen vigilance committees in the Fokontany (neighborhoods) has been announced.

State communication demands results. If this is a political conspiracy, the culprits must be publicly unmasked to validate the state’s thesis. Care must be taken, however, not to blame scapegoats. For the average citizen, the war declared by the Prime Minister must result in a victory—not political, but security-based. Beyond politics, the challenge is to restore the citizen’s right to safety.
