AMBOAVOALANANA – Traders ordered to pack up

The Mahajanga municipality has given traders illegally occupying Amboavoalanana 48 hours to clear sidewalks and public roads, warning that their installations will be demolished if they fail to comply.

The sanitation operation aimed at clearing public spaces continues in Mahajanga. A delegation led by the President of the Special Delegation (PDS), Guy Dolsain Arvely, conducted an inspection yesterday from the City Hall square to Analakely.

The municipality has issued a 48-hour ultimatum for traders operating illegally in the area between the regional bus station and Analakely. After this deadline, unauthorized structures will be demolished.

“The goal is to restore the regional bus station to its original location. This space is reserved for regional bush taxis, not for commerce. Street vendors must also clear the sidewalks to ensure a 1.5-meter passage for pedestrians,” the PDS stated.

Restaurants, second-hand shops, hardware stores, and motorcycle parts shops have occupied this area for decades. Although they were warned a month ago, the municipality has granted a final 48-hour grace period.

Traffic on this axis is severely congested, as bush taxis are forced to park on the road because their designated station is occupied by these businesses. The city aims to improve traffic flow, urban aesthetics, and legal compliance through this operation.
