The “Ny Railovy 70 2.0” concert, scheduled for July 26, marks the return of this legendary group, now carried by a new generation determined to perpetuate its legacy.
On July 26, the CCI Ivato amphitheater will host the grand return of Ny Railovy. Through the “Ny Railovy 70 2.0” concert, the fourth generation will celebrate the 70th anniversary of this iconic formation by revisiting its repertoire with a modern touch. For nearly three and a half hours, the audience will rediscover the songs that marked the group’s history, in a completely reimagined production.
The new lineup includes Hery Randriamahatana, Voahangy Rajaofetra, Nary Andriamahatana, Rinah, Toaiky Andriamahatana, Anthony Andriamahatana, Francky Rakotoniaina, and Odon Ratsinjomanana, with Dr. Souleman as the presenter. Two women have joined the adventure: Rinah, known for her work with the group M. Razafy, and Voahangy Rajaofetra, who has been accompanying Ny Railovy since the 1990s. Most members belong to the founders’ family, while Odon Ratsinjomanana has joined to strengthen the group on bass. “Most of the members are descendants of the family, but we also welcome artists who share the group’s values,” explains Hery Randriamahatana.
The history of Ny Railovy dates back to 1948, when the group was created to promote its compositions on Malagasy radio. After recording its first tracks, it released its first record in 1956, followed by its first album in 1957, before embarking on shows, musicals, and tours. The name Ny Railovy was chosen from several proposals, and the logo was designed by Biry. After a period of success, the group experienced a hiatus before being relaunched in 1988 by Biry with the arrival of the second generation, notably including Hery and Nary Andriamahatana.
“Many wondered if Ny Railovy should still be kept alive. People reminded us that this heritage must not disappear. We understood that it was our responsibility to pass it on,” confides Hery Randriamahatana.
The concert will pay tribute to the founding members, notably Jérôme Randria and Biry, by performing the songs that forged the group’s reputation, including compositions such as “Raha Poety” and “Manga ny fitia.” The voices will be distributed in respect of tradition: Toaiky Andriamahatana, grandson of Pata, will strive to replicate his grandfather’s famous high-pitched voice, while Hery, Nary, and Toaiky will alternate vocal parts, much like Jérôme Randria and Biry did in the past. The six singers will thus preserve the richness of the harmonies that have always been the signature of Ny Railovy.
While remaining faithful to its identity, the group is also preparing for the future. Three new songs have already been performed, even if the historical repertoire will occupy a central place. “It is not about copy-pasting. Each generation must bring its own personality while preserving the vocal level, the Malagasy attire, the diction, and the stage quality that define the identity of Ny Railovy,” emphasizes Hery Randriamahatana.
The show will feature no guests. Faithful to the tradition of Ny Railovy, it will blend music, literature, kabary, and some choreography. The old painted sets will give way to modern scenography, with lighting effects, video projections, and touches of technology inspired by the “2.0” concept, without distorting the spirit of the group.
