RELIGION – Turmoil returns to the Jesosy Mamonjy Church

Rivalries have resurfaced within the Jesosy Mamonjy Church. Yesterday, faithful members demonstrated in front of the church headquarters in Ankorondrano, carrying banners. They are opposing the Board of Directors (CA) election scheduled for July 18. Law enforcement forces were present at the scene.

A segment of the believers is seeking state arbitration regarding an election they describe as “forced.”

“Tensions have persisted for four years due to electoral fraud, which has divided the Jesosy Mamonjy Church into four factions. The time had come to unite to restore peace, but the headquarters leaders refuse and want to maintain a monopoly on management. Five members of the Board are in favor of postponing the election, against four who oppose it and want to push it through,” stated Pastor Jules, who came from Brickaville and serves as the spokesperson for the faithful opposing the election.

For the opposition, holding this vote must be conditional upon prior reconciliation and the restoration of unity. “If they persist in holding it, they will see what happens because we, the representatives of the provinces, have all arrived here,” the pastor warned. According to him, the rights of all baptized members on the island are being trampled upon. Only 20% of believers reportedly possess the required biometric card. To him, this situation amounts to total contempt for the majority by the Board.

On the side of the church headquarters, it is stated that no change of date is being considered. Preparations are well underway. No official wished to speak to provide clarifications on the organization of this election. The opposition has warned that unrest may occur if the vote takes place, as they will not stand by idly.
