SOCIAL MEDIA – New Mexico judge orders Meta to pay $942 million and imposes restrictions for minors

Facebook and Instagram have been sanctioned in New Mexico, USA. A judge in this southwestern state ordered Meta on Thursday to pay a total of $942 million and to implement several restrictions on Facebook and Instagram for minor users in the state for a period of five years. This unprecedented decision in the United States follows the group’s conviction for “public nuisance.”

The amount includes a $567 million reparation fund intended to finance mental health and prevention programs for young people, in addition to $375 million in fines issued in March by a civil jury in Santa Fe. Judge Bryan Biedscheid also limited the cumulative use of Facebook and Instagram for those under 18 in New Mexico to 90 hours per month.

In his ruling, he also ordered the deactivation of certain notifications at night and during school hours, the default hiding of “like” counts, and a ban on romantic or sexualized interactions between minors and Meta’s artificial intelligence chatbots. Other measures include human review of sexual exploitation reports within 48 hours, a ban on adults messaging minors who are not in their contact list, and the deletion of accounts suspected of belonging to children under 13 if their age is not confirmed.

Meta, stating it “disagrees” with the decision, announced it would appeal, claiming to remain “confident” in its adolescent protection mechanisms. The restrictions will not be applied during the appeal process if the company posts a bond. This decision only applies to New Mexico, but Meta is also facing several other proceedings in the United States, including a new trial expected next week in California.
