Ambanja, the Malagasy capital of cocoa, is preparing to vibrate to the rhythm of the 27th Sôrogno Festival. Having become an unmissable event, for 26 years it has carried the ambition of promoting the cultural, sporting, and now economic identity of the Sambirano region.
Since its inception, the festival has never been interrupted, despite organizational challenges and the various crises the country has faced over the years. The term “Sôrogno” refers to the sea, specifically the movement of tides. This image symbolizes the festival’s ambition to support the progress and development of the Sambirano region.
While culture and sports have dominated previous editions, this 27th edition seeks to rebalance the formula by giving a much more significant place to the economy. As cocoa is a key economic identity for Ambanja, an economic fair has been organized to highlight it, with various companies showcasing their products and expertise.
The event also features educational support for students, sports competitions including football, basketball, and a new half-marathon, as well as a rich musical program featuring local and international artists. The festival will conclude with traditional ‘morengy’ wrestling matches, a key part of the region’s cultural heritage.
