After a suspension lasting several days, QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) announced the resumption of its operations in Mandena, Tolagnaro, this Monday, September 7, starting at 6:00 PM. Operations had been interrupted at the end of August following several blockades of the road leading to the mining site, amidst a dispute between the company and farmers from Andranokana.
The claims stem from a court decision concerning twenty-seven farmers in Andranokana whose lands were affected by the installation of a weir. In February 2026, the court ordered QMM to pay them damages. On August 5, the Supreme Court rejected the company’s appeal to challenge the provisional execution of this ruling. Subsequently, protests and blockades of the access road to Mandena took place.
The lifting of the blockade on August 30 had temporarily eased the situation, but QMM had maintained the suspension of its activities, deeming that the conditions for safety and traffic were not yet sufficiently guaranteed.
The resumption announced this September 7 marks a new step, although it does not put an end to the dispute.
