ICC Project: The Professionalization of Artists in Question

Transforming art into a genuine profession and enabling artists to make a living from their work was a key issue raised during the second meeting of the Creative Economy Circle (CEC), held on Saturday at the Cité des Cultures in Antaninarenina. Focused on the theme ‘Training: The First Step Toward Structuring Malagasy Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI),’ the meeting brought together professionals from various cultural sectors to discuss ways to strengthen and professionalize the industry.

For Anatole Ramaroson, a filmmaker and iconic figure in documentary film, professional training is a priority for structuring the CCI. He laments the lack of clear rules and standards in the field. ‘Currently, everyone does as they please. Professional training sometimes becomes merely a way to make money rather than a true space for transferring expertise,’ he noted. He advocates for better regulation of existing initiatives, fostering collaboration, and strengthening the training of trainers. He also emphasized that the State must fulfill its role in granting accreditations and recognizing training structures.

The filmmaker also drew attention to the issue of copyright, which remains a major concern in the audiovisual sector. ‘As an author, one must know where to collect royalties, which organization manages them, and how to access income generated by one’s works,’ he explained. He questioned the criteria for designating the management body and expressed regret that the professionals involved were not sufficiently consulted. In his view, decisions regarding copyright management must be subject to consultation with sector stakeholders to ensure their interests are better represented.
