In response to public complaints regarding the severely deteriorated state of the Berivotra section on National Route 4 (RN4), the Boeny Regional Directorate of Public Works has announced the resumption of roadworks. Rehabilitation had been suspended due to a shortage of essential materials.
Bien-Aimé Raherinirina, the Regional Director of Public Works for Boeny, explained that technical issues with quarry operations and a nationwide bitumen shortage had halted progress. Furthermore, World Bank contract requirements prohibited the use of limestone, forcing technicians to source granite from Maevatanàna in the Betsiboka region and basalt from Marovoay. The contractor has pledged to complete major works up to the Boanamary junction by the end of November.
While users have noted slight improvements between Berivotra and the Boanamary junction, dust and road roughness remain issues. Other sections, such as the stretch between Betsako and Besely, as well as parts of the RN4 from Maevatanàna to Ankazobe, remain in poor condition. New construction sites have also been established in Mandritsarahely and Marosakoa.
Conversely, the 12-km stretch through Ankarafantsika has been successfully rehabilitated with new asphalt and road widening. Additionally, the Tsarahonenana section, which previously took an hour to traverse, can now be crossed in under 10 minutes, though drivers are advised to exercise caution due to newly installed speed bumps between Maevatanàna and Mahatsinjo.
