VAKODRAZANA – ‘Vaky Sehatra’ succeeds in its premiere at Havoria Anosy

For its inaugural edition, “Vaky Sehatra” brought together several generations to celebrate the vakodrazana (traditional heritage) and its various expressions at Havoria Anosy.

The Havoria Anosy hall was nearly full yesterday for this event dedicated to traditional dances. On stage, the troupes first showcased their unique styles before joining together for a collective sequence, accompanied by diverse music and songs.

Fifteen groups and artists participated in this first edition, including Tarika Gasy Kanto, the Ny Vonimbohangy troupe, Ny Voninavoko, Ramahafadrahona, Raozy Gasy, and Rakoto Frah Junior.

For Voahangy Raheliarisoa, president of the Vovonambe (umbrella organization) of vakodrazana troupes, the turnout exceeded expectations. “We did not expect to see so many people,” she noted.

The diversity of the dances presented highlighted this first edition. Six territories or cultural ensembles were honored: Betsileo, Mahajanga, Antsiranana, Toliara, Antananarivo, and Fianarantsoa. Each troupe presented its traditional movements and costumes.

The outfits also contributed to highlighting this heritage. The “lamba ho any,” “lamba landy,” “satroka betsileo,” as well as traditional dresses and other garments, helped distinguish the different cultural expressions. After their respective performances, the participants gathered on stage for a collective finale.

“Vaky Sehatra” marks a first step in the promotion and transmission of vakodrazana. Encouraged by the public’s reception, the Vovonambe is already preparing future events, with the ambition of turning this initiative into a festival.
