World Mental Health Day will take on a musical dimension in Madagascar this year. Through the ’16 MESURES’ project, the Malagasy hip-hop scene will bring together several artists at Antsahamanitra on October 10 to raise awareness about mental health and contribute to the establishment of a hotline dedicated to suicide prevention in Madagascar.
Artists such as Bogota, Voaygang, Double G., Ko Dobla, A.L.P, Mason’Aloka, Illicit Soul, Tommy Montana, X Crew, Yrist, Yvslf, Scka, Vercors, Tangala, Kintaniavo, and Mista & Boska are among those announced, with Lil Guizy and Tata An’Ala also joining the lineup.
With this project, organizers aim to support the creation of a hotline to provide assistance to people facing mental health difficulties. For Luis Rasolondrainy of Hip Hop Works Madagascar and initiator of the project, this mobilization is a response to a concerning situation. He cites the latest estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), which indicate approximately 6.1 suicide deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in Madagascar. ‘As citizens, we cannot remain indifferent to this situation,’ he emphasizes.
The project also continues collaborations with two American organizations. Good Loud Media, based in Oak Park, Illinois, develops cultural and media content specifically for vulnerable or at-risk individuals. For Jed Brewer, president of Good Loud Media, music can play an important role in conveying prevention messages to young people. ‘Asking for help is neither a weakness nor a failure,’ he notes. Additionally, the Los Angeles-based Hip Hop 4 Peace is supporting the project, which aims to combine awareness-raising with fundraising to support mental health services in Madagascar.
