Malagasy pianist Ilo Rakoto has reached a new milestone in his career by receiving the Gold Medal from the Académie Arts-Sciences-Lettres. This prestigious award honors individuals who have contributed remarkably to the promotion of arts, culture, and knowledge transmission. It celebrates a path marked by perseverance, dedication, excellence in interpretation, and profound musical sensitivity.
“I come from a country where music follows a unique path. As a Malagasy artist, I have chosen the path of a musician deeply attached to his roots, while embracing the demanding heritage of the great European classical tradition,” the pianist confided.
This recognition is also part of the momentum driven by Artistes Malgaches, an international cultural initiative co-founded by Tara Shakti, a gallerist, curator, and delegate of the Académie Arts-Sciences-Lettres. The platform supports the promotion of Malagasy artists to cultural and academic institutions to strengthen their visibility and reach on the international stage.
Beyond this distinction, Ilo Rakoto advocates for a vision of music that goes beyond mere technical performance, becoming a universal language that conveys emotion, memory, and heritage. This approach contributes to shining a light on Malagasy talent globally.
Born in Madagascar and trained at the École Normale de Musique de Paris – Alfred Cortot, Ilo Rakoto has developed a career at the crossroads of his Malagasy roots and the European classical tradition. Since his adolescence, the piano has become his primary means of expression, fostering an artistic approach in which listening, memory, emotion, and dialogue between cultures occupy a central place.
His repertoire ranges from Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin, Debussy, and Poulenc to the Malagasy composer Naly Rakotofiringa. He pays particular attention to sound, silence, and nuance. His interpretations of Debussy’s L’Isle joyeuse and Chopin’s Sonata in B minor have been notably acclaimed for their depth, clarity, and sensitivity.
