VOCATIONAL TRAINING – New standards to train sought-after profiles in tourism, solar energy, and school counseling

Training content that matches the real needs of companies. The European Institute for Cooperation and Development (IECD) has officially handed over to the Ministry of Technical Education and Vocational Training (METFP) new training standards for the professions of accommodation team leader, solar technical-sales agent, and school and vocational guidance counselor. These standards, designed to meet the country’s economic reality, will now serve as a basis for harmonizing training content in institutions across the country.

Tourism and energy are among the most promising sectors in Madagascar, says IECD country delegate Manitra Rakotoarivelo, explaining the choice. According to him, investments in these two sectors are increasing with the creation of new companies, which leads to an increased need for qualified labor. It is essential to offer training that meets the needs of employers, he emphasizes.

About ten standards have already been developed. The METFP will ensure their dissemination nationwide, with support from the IECD for certain training centers, particularly for teacher training and the implementation of vocational guidance.

For the Minister of Technical Education and Vocational Training, Dr. Todisoa Andriamampandry, the development of these standards is based on field realities, identified needs, and labor market requirements. The new content will be applied immediately before being gradually deployed in all regions. The minister also recalled that vocational guidance should begin as early as middle or high school to help young people build a coherent career path. Work-study training, combining theoretical instruction and company internships, also facilitates professional integration while developing an entrepreneurial spirit.

Launched in 2020 with financial support from the European Union and the French Development Agency, the partnership between the METFP and the IECD aims to bring vocational training closer to the needs of the job market. Two major achievements have been implemented in six years, including the development and improvement of training standards in three strategic areas. In addition, there is the deployment of work-study training for technicians in solar photovoltaic systems within the technical and vocational high schools of Alarobia and Toliara.
