The port of Mahajanga is getting a facelift. As the third-largest port in Madagascar in terms of cargo volume, this infrastructure has been undergoing major modernization work since February 2025. Inaugurated on Saturday, this first phase of rehabilitation has upgraded several port facilities and strengthened surveillance systems, aiming to modernize installations and bring them into compliance with required standards.
These works are part of a vast rehabilitation project for the port of Mahajanga, designed to strengthen its capacity and role in commercial trade. This initial stage was funded with $10 million by the World Bank.
Minister of Transport and Meteorology, Herizo Andrianavalona, explained that the existing infrastructure was severely degraded and partially damaged by cyclones that hit the region.
The work, completed over 15 months, includes quay reinforcement, installation of anchor rods, technical backfilling, development of platforms and roadways, and equipment for the quays. The Vuillemin warehouse was also rehabilitated.
A key component of the project involves upgrading the port’s surveillance system, including the installation of security cameras across the site and the construction of a control room. Access roads and drainage networks were also rehabilitated, and standard-compliant fencing was installed.
The President of the Refoundation of the Republic, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, visited Mahajanga on Saturday to inaugurate the rehabilitated infrastructure. He believes that the efficient operation of a port like Mahajanga is a major development lever for the region and the country. “The expansion of the port will facilitate the movement of goods and people, thereby contributing to economic growth and improving the living conditions of the population,” he stated.
Located on the west coast of Madagascar, the port of Mahajanga is a major commercial hub for supplying regions along the Mozambique Channel. Its sphere of influence extends from the north to the southwest of Madagascar, including the Diana, Boeny, and Menabe regions, and as far as the Comoros.
The rehabilitation does not stop with this first phase. The next stage involves the overall expansion of the port, for which $30 million in funding has already been mobilized. The Ministry of Transport and Meteorology also plans to separate different operations within the port and install cargo and body scanners. “These second-phase works can begin after the ratification of the Multimodal Transport and Logistics Project (PTML) by the National Assembly,” the Minister added.
