NATIONAL EDUCATION – Traditional A, C, and D series abolished for the Baccalaureate

The Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research have officially announced the abolition of traditional Baccalaureate series. This decision takes effect starting this school year.

It is confirmed: the traditional A, C, and D series are abolished, and candidates will no longer be able to register for them. “Candidates will have to choose from three new streams: Literary (L), Scientific (S), and Organization, Society, and Economy (OSE), starting with the 2027 Baccalaureate registrations,” stated Professor Angelo Raherinirina, Director General of Higher Education.

The announcement was made yesterday in Fiadanana during a joint press conference. This measure aims to optimize the organization of exams and simplify their design, as designers previously had to prepare seven distinct subjects.

This reform is part of the new curriculum piloted since 2020. “Field tests have yielded conclusive results, and we are now rolling out this program progressively,” indicated Yves Martin Razafimandranto, Director General of Pedagogy. The old curriculum, dating back to 1996, was deemed no longer aligned with current realities.

“In the face of scientific progress and global changes, curricula needed to evolve. The old system no longer met society’s needs or empowered youth to innovate and create jobs. The new orientation aims to form creative, autonomous citizens while instilling values of patriotism and social cohesion,” he added.

Baccalaureate registrations will begin in January. Professor Raherinirina assured that students currently in the old series will be supported to ensure no candidate is penalized. Meanwhile, private schools, including Catholic schools led by Father Jules Ranaivoson, have expressed opposition to the immediate implementation, advocating for a more gradual rollout.
