Malagasy Billiards Union Championship: Selection for the World Championship takes shape

The competition continues as the tenth stage of the Malagasy Billiards Union (UBM) championship was held this weekend. The official national calendar features twelve stages this season, with participants divided into four categories: Men, Ladies, Seniors, and U23.

The top performers in each category will form the national team for the World Championships, scheduled to take place in Cape Town, South Africa, from October 24 to November 1. “The UBM aims to field eight players per category, totaling thirty-two,” stated UBM president Tsinjohasina Rabeharisoa, known as “Tesy”.

The UBM was established last year. “Selection will be based on the final rankings after the twelve stages. Players will compete in singles, doubles, and team events at the World Championships,” added the association head. Each team will consist of five players on the match sheet plus three substitutes.

Daniela Andriamihaja, a quarter-finalist at the last World Championships, remains the favorite in the Men’s category, having won the tenth stage this weekend after securing three previous victories. In the same category, Andry Mickaël has achieved a hat-trick, and Eric Dearest has also claimed a title. Among the ladies, Fahren, winner of the tenth stage, has dominated the competition over the past six months with at least six victories. Anjamalalaniaina Rabetafika and Stéphanie Diallo have also performed strongly.

In the Seniors category, John Ratovoarison won the tenth stage, while UBM president Tesy has secured four victories so far. Other stage winners include Teddy Andrianarison and Mamy Angelo Rakoto. In the U23 category, Toavina Razanadrakotoarisoa claimed victory in the tenth stage, adding to his two previous wins, with Henika Fitia Rafatro and Jordan Andrianjakamihamina also among the winners.

Only two stages remain to determine the final rankings. The championship is hosted across four venues in the capital: One More in Avaratr’Anjanahary, Arena in Amparibe, MY Adal’s in Ambondrona, and Totem in Antaninarenina. The eleventh stage is scheduled for August 1-2, and the final stage for August 22-23.
