A woman and her daughter perished in the shipwreck of the vessel “Zanadrano 3,” which occurred yesterday around 4:00 AM off the coast of Ambodiharina, in the Mahanoro district.
The boat, which departed from Betampona bound for Mahanoro, was carrying approximately twenty passengers, including seven children and thirteen adults, along with three crew members. On board were also nearly six tons of goods, primarily coffee and pepper.
According to the operator, the boat already had cracks before its departure, but the voyage proceeded despite the overload. This combination of structural weakness and excessive weight is believed to have precipitated the tragedy. The bodies of the victims are currently in Ambodiharina. Authorities, faced with a lack of identification documents for the deceased, are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying them.
Residents, who rely on these modes of transport to connect communes and ship agricultural products, are regularly exposed to risks. Authorities are considering strengthening safety inspections.
