MAHAJANGA – Traditional Attire Highlights Madagascar’s National Day Celebrations

The Malagasy dress code, recommended by the President of the Republic’s Refoundation, Michaël Randrianirina, was unanimously adopted and implemented in Mahajanga during the June 26th National Day celebrations.

Participants in the parade—including students, athletes, association members, regional and municipal staff, vocational school students, distinguished guests, and local authorities—wore outfits with elegance, showcasing Malagasy identity. The Malagasy tricolor flag adorned the entire parade ceremony in front of the Mahajanga City Hall yesterday.

The celebration of the 66th anniversary of independence, themed “Reforms for Madagascar’s Progress,” distinguished itself from previous editions. The goal of this June 26th celebration was to highlight Malagasy culture and identity. The Boeny Regional Chief, Nasolo Adakalo, and the Mayor (PDS) of Mahajanga, Guy Dolsain Arvely, swapped their suits and shirts for outfits made of Malagasy “soga” fabric, tailored in a style similar to the “mini-malabary.”

The elected deputy for Mahajanga, Christian Afankandro, wore his traditional “lamba” as trousers, as is his custom. “A nation that does not possess its culture is lost. It contributes to awakening a sense of patriotism, which in turn fosters development. All regions followed the directive, which is a positive initiative,” stated the Vice-President of the National Assembly.

Regarding the parade, the Prefect of Mahajanga, Nicolas Rabenandrasana, wore his navy blue civil administrator uniform, as he was in charge of the chancellery for the presentation of honorary distinctions. Pupils from public primary schools (EPP) stood out in tricolor outfits, wearing uniforms echoing the colors of the national flag. For instance, students from the Antanimalandy EPP, the private Catholic high school Victoire Rasoamanarivo in Tsararano Ambony, and the Fanantenana EPP in Fiofio wore coordinated outfits featuring red ties, white shirts, and green trousers. Participants from women’s associations also showcased their traditional attire and hairstyles, offering a spectacle enjoyed by the public.

The military review, conducted by the Prefect of Mahajanga, opened the ceremony at 9:47 AM. Subsequently, the decoration of 18 recipients—including three at the rank of Grand Cross 2nd Class and seven as Knights of the National Order—preceded the traditional review and procession. The parade began around 10:47 AM, with motorized units concluding the display by the various Defense and Security Forces. Students from public and private primary, middle, and high schools marched alongside vocational institutions and scout groups. Athletes, political figures, and staff from the municipality and the Boeny region were also present.
