The Council of Christian Churches in Madagascar (FFKM) in the province of Mahajanga delivered two messages during an ecumenical service held on Sunday afternoon at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Jesus Christ in Mahajanga Be.
The sermon, delivered by the synodal president of the FJKM Boina Vaovao SP 17, Reverend Josoa Gabriel Randriamampianina, was inspired by the Epistle to the Romans, chapter 13:1-7. ‘Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves (verses 1 and 2).’
The synodal president explained, ‘This epistle encourages the Church to maintain good relationships with political leaders and to submit to them, as authority comes from God. The people must obey their leaders; failure to do so, such as not paying taxes or disrespecting leadership, invites sanctions. God has entrusted power to the leaders, and they must use it to aim for the development of the people, bringing peace, tranquility, goodness, and life. Those who oppose authority oppose God. Since authority comes from God, those who hold it must also show a fear of God. Furthermore, those in power must respect God and punish those who commit evil and corruption. A lack of respect for God and a refusal to do good for the people lead to the ruin of the nation. Let us do God’s will so that the country may move forward in unity.’
During his address, the Prefect of Mahajanga, Nicolas Rabenandrasana, emphasized the importance of working with integrity and the fear of God. ‘We must be attentive and accept that we have been chosen by God, in good conscience, to work with integrity and the fear of God. In this 66th year, we remain at the heart of the country’s development project. We are still at the project stage. Let us move in the right direction for the development of the country,’ the Prefect urged.
‘The Church participates in uniting its children who turn to God. The duty of unity within the government is to pray. Look at the situation of the Malagasy people. We must join in prayer to defeat corruption and develop the country. Our duty is to pray, to unite, and to reconcile. It echoes Jesus’ prayer: that all may be one. We therefore have a duty,’ declared the FFKM representative during his speech.
