The number of deaths linked to Mpox in Madagascar has reached twenty. A 48-year-old woman has died from the disease in Vavatenina. This new victim brings the total number of deaths recorded in the country since the start of the epidemic to twenty. The information was communicated the day before yesterday during the presentation of the situation report on the evolution of the Mpox epidemic in Madagascar.
“Mpox can present in a severe form and lead to death. Some people still minimize the disease by claiming that it does not kill,” emphasizes Professor Mamy Jean de Dieu Randria, Incident Manager of the national Public Health Emergency Operations Center (COUSP).
Faced with this situation, health authorities are calling on the population not to neglect barrier measures. As soon as the first symptoms appear, it is recommended to go to an Mpox treatment center as quickly as possible to avoid complications. Vulnerable people are also invited to get vaccinated against the disease.
From December 18, 2025, to July 23, 2026, Madagascar recorded 4,656 notified cases, including 3,048 confirmed cases. In total, 2,145 people have recovered and 20 deaths have been recorded. The results of 4,197 tests have been communicated, with a positivity rate of 72.62%.
