Water pipe replacement work continues on a new axis, causing further traffic disruptions in the city center. New road sections in Mahamasina will be closed starting today. The Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA) has announced the total or partial closure of certain lanes as part of the installation of large water pipes, scheduled under Phase II of the Integrated Sanitation Program for Antananarivo (PIAA II).
“Traffic will be partially cut (on half of the roadway) on the lane located in front of the Sainte-Famille school up to the 5th arrondissement police station in Mahamasina. Traffic will be completely cut on the lane located in front of the Barea Stadium in Mahamasina,” the CUA stated on its Facebook page.
These measures will be effective from Monday, August 10, 2026, at 4:00 AM until Saturday, October 31, 2026. The work is expected to last approximately two and a half months. Several traffic adjustments accompany these closures. The taxi-be stop served by lines 125, 184, 127, 128, and 015, located in front of the Antanimbarinandriana General Education College (CEG), has been removed and transferred in front of the Antanimbarinandriana vehicle sales area. On Thursdays, market day, the stop will be exceptionally moved in front of the Saint-Joseph Catholic Church in Amparibe.
New detour routes are also planned. From the Sainte-Famille school towards Gerb’or Mahamasina, vehicles will pass in front of the Antanimbarinandriana CEG, go around the Senate roundabout in Anosy, and then take the Cité des Jardins before rejoining their usual route. From the Ambohidahy tunnel towards Ankadilalana, motorists must continue to the Senate roundabout in Anosy, pass through the Cité des Jardins, and then resume their usual journey.
These works are already causing significant traffic disruptions in the city center. Rakotobe Street, located in front of the 5th arrondissement police station in Mahamasina, remains closed until September 15, 2026. Rainibetsimisaraka Street, in front of the Tanà Plaza hotel up to Petite Vitesse, has been closed since July 9. In Antanimena, the lane in front of the Malacam stadium is also inaccessible. Other sections may be closed as part of this project.
