Madagascar will host Guinea-Bissau in Morocco for their next AFCON qualifying match. This encounter, counting for the third matchday, will take place on November 12.
No room for error. Madagascar will face Guinea-Bissau during the next two matchdays of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Due to the lack of an approved stadium in Madagascar, the Barea will play these two matches, counting for the third and fourth matchdays, outside the country.
They will host the ‘Lycaons’ in the first leg on Thursday, November 12, at 7:00 PM Malagasy time, at the Meknès Honor Stadium in Morocco. The return leg will be held on Tuesday, November 17, at 7:00 PM at the 24th of September Stadium in Guinea-Bissau.
Without a win in the first two matchdays, the Barea have compromised their qualification chances. Madagascar is provisionally in third place in Group L, following their defeat against Nigeria and their draw against Tanzania.
The hierarchy was not respected during these first two days. Coming from pot 4 and considered the underdog of the group, Guinea-Bissau surprised the Nigerian Super Eagles (3-0), representatives of one of the great African football nations and favorites of the group, during the second matchday. They had previously beaten Tanzania (2-0), one of the three host countries of the next AFCON and, as such, automatically qualified.
Madagascar, from pot 2, lost to Nigeria (1-2) on the latter’s home turf during the first matchday, before being held to a draw by Tanzania (1-1) during the second. The provisional ranking thus shakes up the hierarchy established on paper between the four selections of Group L.
With two wins in as many matches, Guinea-Bissau leads the group with 6 points, ahead of Nigeria (3 points). Madagascar ranks third, ahead of Tanzania, with both teams having one point each.
Mathematically, the men of Corentin Da Silva Martins still have a chance of qualification, but their situation remains delicate. The Barea must correct their course to hope for a second qualification for the final phase of the AFCON, after their historic run in Egypt in 2019.
