COMMERCE – Toliara can now import directly from China

The weekly meeting organized at the Carrefour des entrepreneurs in Toliara, a space conceived and designed by Lanto Rakotoarivelo, a local entrepreneur, was held last Thursday. On this occasion, representatives from an import-export company presented opportunities for direct importation from China to entrepreneurs seeking information and networking. They explained that it is now possible for entrepreneurs in Toliara and other interested parties to import directly from China. “The system is based on cargo consolidation. Several importers can share a single container if they cannot cover the cost individually. The shipping rate by sea from China to Toliara is 390 dollars per cubic meter, which is roughly equivalent to six bales of secondhand clothing,” explained agent Tsiory R.

Import consolidation is a popular choice among many Toliara entrepreneurs who previously pooled their shipments with those in Antananarivo. However, exports from Toliara remain very low, according to experts. An exporter of cassava flour and derivative products shared the procedures and steps required for exporting, particularly for perishable goods like hers. “It is preferable to ship parcels by air, which entails a certain cost,” she emphasized. Nevertheless, entrepreneurs in Toliara are considering venturing into the export market.
