Ida Rakotomanga won the fourth edition of the Ethical and Sustainable Fashion competition with his collection “Ry tiako.” The designer combines graphic design, craftsmanship, and local materials.
A love letter told through silk, sewn, embroidered, and printed on garments—this original artistic approach allowed Ida Rakotomanga to stand out during the fourth edition of the Ethical and Sustainable Fashion competition. Through his “Ry tiako” collection, the creator combines personal expression, Malagasy cultural heritage, and environmental commitment. This award crowns a collective effort and reinforces his vision of fashion that is both artistic and responsible.
For Ida Rakotomanga, this victory represents, above all, immense relief and deep pride, shared with his team. “It is the fruit of collective work, and seeing all this effort rewarded brings a real sense of accomplishment. It is also proof that my vision resonates and touches people,” he confides.
Through “Ry tiako,” the stylist tells the story of a man who struggles to express his emotions despite overflowing love and hope. The collection takes the form of a letter with messages expressed on clothing through embroidery, painting, screen printing, crochet, and sewing. Each outfit carries a part of his story while echoing the culture.
His uniqueness lies in his graphic approach to clothing. A graphic designer by training, Ida Rakotomanga transposes his perspective onto fashion design, giving relief and depth to his creations. He explores various artisanal techniques, including pyrography, screen printing, stenciling, crochet, and embroidery. For this collection, he favored silk, including “landy be” and “landy kely,” as well as silk fabrics sold on the local market.
Ida combines these materials with an upcycling approach by reusing leather scraps, threads, and textiles. It is a way to transform discarded materials into artistic elements and to defend circular fashion that is attentive to the environment and respectful of artisanal know-how.
Since childhood, Ida Rakotomanga has nurtured a particular interest in manual creation. Drawing, sewing, DIY, and material transformation formed his world early on. Accustomed to imagining and bringing his ideas to life, he naturally developed a personal approach without seeking to systematically follow trends or paths taken by others.
This passion gradually took on a professional dimension with the launch of his brand, MVG (Mbala Vita Gasy). In its early days, the brand was mainly dedicated to customizing T-shirts, notably through freehand painting, screen printing, and various textile marking techniques. As orders grew, his clients’ expectations led him to explore other forms of clothing creation. By agreeing to step out of his initial field, he gradually discovered fashion design. Each new project then became an opportunity for learning and experimentation.
