FOOTBALL – U15 World Cup: Madagascar qualifies for the quarter-finals

After defeating Iraq (2-1) in the round of 32, the young Barea dominated Uzbekistan (4-1) in the round of 16 on Wednesday, advancing to the quarter-finals.

Madagascar continues to surprise at the 2026 FIFA U15 World Cup & Festival. In this first edition of the competition held in Baku, Azerbaijan, the young Barea have authoritatively cleared the round of 16 hurdle.

Following a hard-fought victory against Iraq in the round of 32, the representatives of the Great Island confirmed their momentum by outclassing Uzbekistan with a decisive 4-1 scoreline. This performance opens the doors to the quarter-finals and keeps hopes alive for an even more ambitious run. The 6B pitch at the Hovsan sports complex was the stage for another Malagasy demonstration.

Against the Uzbeks, the young Barea quickly took control of the match, showing greater mastery and offensive efficiency. Francisco opened the scoring, before Toky doubled the lead. By halftime, Madagascar had already built a comfortable two-goal cushion. After the break, Mendrika sealed the deal by scoring the third goal. Despite this lead, Uzbekistan managed to narrow the gap to 1-3, but the young Barea did not let doubt set in. Francisco scored his second goal to seal the 4-1 victory and secure qualification.

This performance follows a particularly contested round of 32 against Iraq. Trailing in the score, the Malagasy team managed to turn the tide thanks to Tiavo, who scored the equalizer, and Francisco, who netted the winner (2-1).

Arsène Wenger, FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, explained the goal of this U15 World Cup: “Talent exists everywhere, but young players do not always have the same chances to compete on an international scale. This tournament aims to offer them that opportunity.”
