The death toll continues to rise. Devastating floods that struck Nepal and the Chinese region of Tibet on Wednesday, August 26, have resulted in 919 deaths, according to the latest official figures released on Monday. Authorities in both countries are also without news of 4,793 people. Nepal reports 903 deaths and 4,247 missing, while 16 deaths and 546 disappearances have been recorded on the Chinese side, according to provisional figures.
Search and rescue operations are continuing under difficult conditions, particularly in the Trishuli Valley, Nepal. Around a hundred workers may be trapped in a tunnel at the Trishuli-3 hydroelectric project site. Rescuers are attempting to clear the water and debris obstructing the structure.
Thousands of people have already been evacuated by air and land. Teams from India, China, and South Korea are participating in the operations alongside Nepalese military, police, and guides.
In Tibet, rescuers are also continuing their search in the most affected areas, particularly around the Gyirong border crossing, where infrastructure has been destroyed by the waters.
Authorities attribute this exceptional flood to the collapse of a major glacier, which is believed to have caused a sudden surge in water levels. The extent of the material damage has not yet been assessed, but the Nepalese government estimates it could reach billions of dollars.
Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah described the catastrophe as a “natural disaster of unimaginable scale,” as rescue and victim identification operations continue.
