Tanzanian Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi will step down from his post on September 4. On Tuesday, he announced his decision to retire from politics and public service. Appointed to the position in November 2025, he stated that he wishes to align with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s desire for change.
“I have written to President Hassan to inform her that I have decided to retire from politics and public service. I will therefore resign from the position of Vice President,” Emmanuel Nchimbi indicated in a message posted in Swahili on his Instagram account. The Vice President said he is “convinced, without a shadow of a doubt,” that the Head of State “wishes for change.” He also explained that he wants to honor a promise made to Samia Suluhu Hassan to step down whenever she wished.
Emmanuel Nchimbi was appointed Vice President in November 2025, after serving as Samia Suluhu Hassan’s running mate during the October presidential election. The President won the election with 98% of the vote, amid strong protests and the repression of opposition demonstrations.
The announced departure of Emmanuel Nchimbi comes as Tanzania remains under the scrutiny of the opposition and human rights organizations, which denounce a growing restriction of political space and critical voices.
An inquiry commission set up by the authorities recorded 518 deaths on the sidelines of the October elections, without assigning responsibility. For their part, the opposition and human rights organizations suggest a death toll that could reach approximately 2,000, which they attribute to security forces.
Having come to power in 2021 following the death of John Magufuli, Samia Suluhu Hassan initially initiated a political opening after several years of severe restrictions on public space. However, this orientation has gradually hardened, particularly as the 2025 presidential election approached and in its aftermath.
The announcement of Emmanuel Nchimbi’s departure paves the way for the appointment of a new Vice President to serve alongside Samia Suluhu Hassan.
