TENNIS – DAVIS CUP 2026 – Madagascar bets on a renewed squad

The 2026 Davis Cup for Group V, Africa Zone, will take place from July 22 to 25 in Brazzaville, Congo. It marks a new milestone for Malagasy tennis, with a clear directive: “Build the best possible team for Madagascar.”

The national team’s preparation was organized over several weeks around this guideline, aiming to bring together the best current players while preparing the next generation. Captain Rija Rajaobelina has selected Antso Rakotondramanga, Valentin Rakotondrasoa, Lucas Andriamasilalao, and Tovonirina, with the goal of promoting to Group IV.

This selection is the culmination of work involving an initial group of twelve players. Selection criteria were defined from the start: the reigning Madagascar champion, Valentin Rakotondrasoa, received an automatic spot. Two veteran players were chosen based on experience, current form, and stability, while the final spot was earned directly on the court during selection matches held in Ankatso in mid-June.

At just 18 years old, Tovonirina secured his first national team selection. The preparation phase also focused on integrating young talent, such as Mirija Andriantefihasina, who was sidelined by injury. The mission entrusted to Rija Rajaobelina rests on three pillars: gathering experienced players, preparing the young generation, and valuing local talent. Now in Brazzaville, the four representatives must translate this preparation into results on the court.
