“The protection of life, respect for human dignity, truth, and justice are the foundations of social peace and trust between leaders and the population.” Based on this premise, recalled in a statement released at the end of the week, the Council of Christian Churches in Madagascar (FFKM) calls on Malagasy people to exercise restraint in their speech and to preserve social peace. At the same time, it urges the authorities to take responsibility in the face of the increasing number of disappearances and to take fair and legitimate measures with full transparency.
“We call on the entire Malagasy people to remain calm, to show discernment and self-control,” the FFKM urges in its statement. It calls for “no one to give in to violence, defamation, a spirit of revenge, or the dissemination of unverified information.” While “many families and the entire population are worried and in distress,” as noted by the FFKM, “it is dialogue, mutual respect, and ‘fihavanana’ (social harmony) that must prevail.”
Faced with the tensions arising from the country’s security situation, the FFKM also invites the authorities to ensure “that the current danger does not happen again.” It calls on them to “continue to take their responsibilities and to take fair and legitimate measures, in full transparency.” For the FFKM, beyond violence and the loss of human life following certain cases of disappearance, deaths are also due “to recklessness and a lack of vigilance.” “Life is sacred and it is everyone’s duty to protect it,” it emphasizes.
