SHYN: ‘I want to make our music known to the world’

From his beginnings in Toamasina to his international recognition, Shyn now aims to carry the Malagasy musical identity beyond borders.

Born Be Jean Prosper, Shyn harbors an international ambition: to introduce Malagasy music to the entire world. “My goal is to make our music known worldwide,” asserts the artist, who is also an entrepreneur and a major figure in the Malagasy music scene.

The son of a saxophonist who accompanied the likes of Radama Antoine on tours, Shyn grew up in a musical environment. As a teenager, the lyrics left behind by his older brother, a writer who passed away in 2000, encouraged him to learn to sing and convey his own messages. His first stage appearance took place at a concert where he was introduced as a guest artist, performing with his back to the audience.

In 2003, he met a well-known group in Tamatave and participated in the Jiolahy group’s album. He then learned the basics of studio production before pursuing two years of self-taught training, dedicating long hours to music. In 2007, his songs began to be played on the radio, followed by numerous media appearances and stage performances, notably at Antsahamanitra.

His career gradually opened up to the international stage with the Makua Tour in France, after having accompanied Denise in France and Côte d’Ivoire before 2014. His track “Resimpitia” earned him a continental revelation award, followed by his participation in the 2017 Afrima (All Africa Music Awards) and an experience in the United States, specifically in Dallas.

With over a hundred songs, Shyn claims his attachment to R&B, to which he has added new rhythms in Madagascar. “Some did not immediately accept this new rhythm, but it is part of the essence I wanted to bring and the vision I established,” he explains. He remains faithful to his roots: “I am not leaving R&B. Even if rhythms and styles evolve, one must always return to the origin and the fundamentals.”
