DARK ANNIVERSARY – The trial for the Imerinkasinina tragedy to be held over two days

The trial for the Imerinkasinina tragedy, which claimed thirty-one lives in June 2025, will open on November 18 and 19 at the Anosy court. Families are demanding that the full truth be revealed.

The trial regarding the food poisoning incident that occurred during a birthday party in Imerinkasinina on June 14, 2025, resulting in thirty-one deaths, is finally set to begin. It will take place over two days, Wednesday, November 18, and Thursday, November 19. According to an official statement from the Ministry of Justice, “the trial, which will be held at the Anosy court, will be open to the public.” “We were summoned today (yesterday) to collect our subpoenas,” said Voavy Marie, mother of Nombana and Onja, who died following the poisoning at the party.

Last August, hearings for the families of victims who lost children, siblings, or other loved ones in this case were concluded. Nearly a hundred people have been heard by the Public Prosecutor at the Anosy court since the start of witness testimonies. During her visit to victims receiving treatment abroad, Minister of Justice Fanirisoa Ernaivo indicated that “the results of analyses of substances suspected to be at the origin of the tragedy, conducted in Mauritius and Russia, are among the evidence expected before the trial.”

However, parents who lost their children on that dark Saturday continue to believe it could be a case of intentional poisoning. “Far be it from us to suggest this, but it could even be a human sacrifice. The case must therefore be examined and judged with complete truth, because if the light is not shed, our children will have died for nothing,” emphasized Voavy Marie. Families are also waiting for the truth to be established regarding individuals cited as the potential true culprits behind this food poisoning.

The presence of a certain “papa sôsy,” suspected of having acted in collusion with Fenohasina, the organizer of the birthday party, had notably marked this case. “What we are asking for is simple: that the whole truth be revealed about this case, in accordance with the statements of the Minister, who has followed the file closely. This person must therefore be identified,” declared Urbain Randrianarivo, president of the victims’ families association, in a telephone interview yesterday.

Most of the victims’ families also expressed concern over the absence of the names of Fenohasina and his mother from the list of people summoned to appear on November 18. “Only the names of Mrs. Clarisse and her accomplice, the traditional healer who allegedly spread the toxic substances, appear there. This worries us, and we will ask the court for explanations. However, we hope that what we fear will not happen and that their names might appear among those of their accomplices,” added the president of the victims’ families association.

On June 19, 2025, the suspects in the Imerinkasinina food poisoning case were brought before the Anosy court prosecutor for the first time. Three women were placed in pre-trial detention following their interrogation.
