A coefficient of 5 for core subjects, 2 to 4 for complementary subjects, and 1 for modern languages. These are the new coefficients applied in the final year for the L (Literary), S (Scientific), and OSE (Organization, Society, and Economy) series, starting from the 2026-2027 school year. The total coefficient has been reduced from 32 to 30, with a new distribution of subject weighting. These changes have just been formalized by the Ministry of National Education (MEN) as part of the new curriculum (PE) for preschool, primary, middle, and high school levels.
In the L series, languages take on significant importance. Malagasy and French remain with a coefficient of 5, while English now becomes a core subject, also assigned a coefficient of 5. Previously, it was offered as an elective modern language. Philosophy drops from 5 to 4, while history-geography remains at 3. Mathematics, physical sciences, and life and earth sciences (SVT) retain a coefficient of 1. Students also have one modern language with a coefficient of 1, choosing between Spanish, Russian, or German.
For the S series, scientific disciplines remain at the heart of the curriculum. Mathematics, physical sciences, and life and earth sciences (SVT) are all assigned a coefficient of 5, as in the previous program. Malagasy, French, English, and history-geography are set at a coefficient of 2. Other disciplines complete the grid to reach a total of 30.
The OSE series also maintains high coefficients for its core disciplines. Mathematics, history-geography, and economic and social sciences (SES) are assigned a coefficient of 5. French, Malagasy, and English are at 2, as are physical sciences and SVT, which increase to 2 compared to 1 in some configurations of the old system.
Beyond the reduction of the total coefficient from 32 to 30, the new grid aims to better differentiate the weight of disciplines according to the orientation of each series. For literary students, the integration of English as a core subject is one of the most visible changes this school year. The Ministry specifies that the new curriculum is now official and available for free online. The curriculum is not intended for sale but for download by educational institutions.
