In the United States, 21-year-old, 2.03m tall Jerry Pépin Rabibisoa is pursuing his journey by combining studies and basketball. The Toliara native intends to make the most of this experience.
Jerry Pépin Rabibisoa, how is your integration into the United States going?
My integration into the United States is going quite well. At first, it wasn’t necessarily easy because everything was new to me: the culture, daily life, studies, and especially the language. But, little by little, I am adapting and finding my bearings more and more. The people around me have welcomed me well, especially my teammates, my coaches, and the people at school. I feel very well supported, and that helps me a lot to integrate.
Was English an obstacle when you arrived?
As for English, I am progressing every day. At the beginning, I sometimes had trouble understanding certain conversations, but now, I understand much better. I mainly try to speak as much as possible to improve. I know I still have a lot to learn, but I already see great progress.
How is your adaptation to American studies going?
Regarding studies, it is also going well. The school system is different from what I have known before, so it requires a lot of work and organization. I try to stay serious and give the best of myself, while continuing to work hard in basketball.
Is it difficult to reconcile studies and basketball?
It takes a lot of organization and seriousness to succeed in doing both. I must stay focused on my studies while continuing to work hard in basketball. It is a balance that I try to find on a daily basis. Basketball opens the doors to a new life in the United States. This American experience is changing the way I see the future, because I came from far away, from the depths of Toliara, to seize my chance here in America.
What does this American experience represent and what are your ambitions?
I am very grateful to have this opportunity to live this experience in the United States. I come from far away and I might never have imagined being here one day. Today, I want to take advantage of every opportunity, progress, succeed in my studies, and continue to move forward in basketball. To conclude, I would like to thank all the people who helped me realize this dream, which has become a reality. I will try not to disappoint them.
