ANDRAVOAHANGY – Fake Presidential Advisor Arrested

The Betongolo Gendarmerie apprehended a septuagenarian in Andravoahangy suspected of usurping the title of advisor to the President of the Refoundation. The 75-year-old man, who posed as an advisor to the President of the Refoundation of the Republic of Madagascar, was arrested on Wednesday.

According to the gendarmerie, he used a phone number to claim he could secure recruitment in the Civil Service or facilitate the admission of candidates into the National Gendarmerie. The Antananarivo-City Brigade arrested the man, a native of Morondava, who claimed to be a former first-class principal gendarme. However, checks with the National Gendarmerie’s personnel management department confirmed his identity does not appear among active or retired personnel.

The man is in custody, and an investigation for fraud and usurpation of title and function has been opened. Authorities noted numerous complaints against him for extorting money. This arrest follows a series of similar cases, including another impostor recently detained at the Fiadanana Criminal Research Section for conducting an illegal search in Ambohibao.

In response to these incidents, the Presidency issued a statement on July 10, clarifying that Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, President of the Refoundation of the Republic, has not authorized anyone to conduct searches. The statement emphasized that the Head of State relies on the Prime Minister and ministers to execute instructions, not self-proclaimed advisors.
